H undreds of well-wishers, supporters and relatives lined the streets of Taunton, Somerset, in the driving rain today, holding aloft Welcome Home banners, union flags and a sea of umbrellas, to celebrate the safe return of the Royal Marines of 40 Commando back from Afghanistan. Shopkeepers huddled in doorways, office workers hung out of windows, and the crowd, seven deep in places, cheered and clapped as the strong unit marched past in their homecoming parade. There were tears shed too, among those watching, for the men left behind and those who, through their injuries, could not join the parade. The bald fact is that few in this close-knit unit have been left unscarred by the legacy of their six-month tour in Sangin, Helmand province, which ended last month. A measure of just how bloody the battle for the Taliban stronghold has become can be gauged by the number of young saplings planted on a sloping hill behind Norton Manor barracks, home to 40 Commando. But a week ago tomorrow, watched by the bereaved families in the bright November sunshine, the marines planted 14 more, marking a fourfold rise in the number who lost their lives in Afghanistan over the last six months. During their deployment on Operation Herrick 12 — they were the last British troops to leave Sangin before the handover to US forces — the strong unit also suffered almost 50 wounded, many very seriously, including one marine who is now a triple amputee. Last week, away from the spotlight of the homecoming, those who escaped with their lives were in a reflective mood. Sangin has become a totemic place for our armed forces. It is the deadliest area in Afghanistan, after four years under control of British forces; it has become a byword for everything that has gone wrong in Helmand.

Making a relationship work under “normal” conditions can be a challenge, however, dating someone in the Armed Forces such as a Royal Marine brings with it additional barriers and obstacles to overcome. A serving Marine is often away for long periods of time and might get informed of this at short notice. You might also have to deal with your partner being sent on operational tour, which will add even more stress and emotions into the mix.

However, there are steps that you can to help lessen the feeling of distance, help you to deal with the emotions involved and to ensure your relationship is a successful and happy one. Write letters.

My boyfriend is now in week 11 of his Royal Marine Training and i have been browsing the internet for some advice and came across your feed. I will be 21 aswell and i do feel ready to settle down but dont want to leave my home town and job and friends! And do they get holiday, like other jobs, that they can take when they need to do so Even though i am used to him being away, training is proving okay as i do get to talk to him pretty much every day unless he is out on excersise!

I am just longing to know what life after training is going to entail for us.. My H2B is in the royal marines and has been for 8 years although we’ve only been together 3. If your boyfriend is stationed in a standard unit and not deployed overseas then they do get the weekends off most of the time. Obviously depending on how far away his unit is based will make a big difference to whether he will amke it home or not.

Most of the units are based in the Southwest, with 2 units up in Scotland. I was very lucky and met h2B whilst he was based close to my hometown but he is now based 2.

The Royal Marines describe themselves as ‘the world’s most elite amphibious fighting force’. But how do you become one?

In one promotional video a marine walks through smoke wearing night vision goggles and looking like one of the sand people from Star Wars. But many of the famed episodes in marine history are spectacular failures: the Dieppe Raid, St Nazaire, Suez. The current overhaul has two points of consequence. The first is that it represents an attempt to transform the Royal Marines from an obsolete auxiliary infantry into a kind of special forces-lite.

The question of whether or not to station quasi-special forces across the world is a strategic decision of some importance: accordingly it has been barely discussed. Whatever aim is imagined for these expeditionary commandos, it is clear that it is not defensive. The descriptions of the Future Commando Force stress global ambitions at odds with British foreign policy, and reality. The UK is currently a second-tier economic power in the class of Japan and India, but that is vestigial.

In the long-term the UK will slip into the third global tier alongside Australia and Indonesia, and will have to give up pretensions to global influence.
